The European project i2X \u2013 Intelligent Implementations of the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF)<\/strong>co-funded by the \u201cDigital Europe\u201d Programme, the project \u201cSmart Applications of the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format\u201d was launched on April 1, 2025. The initiative aligns with the EU's Digital Single Market strategy and the ambitious goals of the Digital Decade 2030.<\/p>\n

The project includes the participation of six companies and organizations from Greece: IDIKA S.A., the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the University of Thessaly, the Hellenic Cancer Federation \u2013 ELLOK, Affidea diagnostic centers, Gnomon Informatics S.A., and Mindview Strategy & Research. Partner organizations from Cyprus are also involved, led by the National eHealth Authority (NeHA), along with the research center Cyens and the German Oncology Center.<\/p>\n

IDIKA will leverage its experience in electronic prescribing and summary medical history management. The University of Thessaly will contribute by introducing innovative technologies in the process of medical data management by healthcare professionals. ELLOK, as a patient organization, will contribute patient insights on managing their own health data, particularly in specialized areas such as cancer treatment, with a focus on survivorship processes. The Affidea diagnostic centers will utilize their expertise in the field of laboratory results. Gnomon Informatics will apply its know-how and products as a demonstration site for the proper implementation of the European electronic health record format in practice. Finally, Mindview will contribute its experience in the field of communication and project dissemination.<\/p>\n

The National eHealth Authority (EAHY) coordinates the project \"Extended EHR@EU Data Space for Primary Use \u2013 Xt-EHR,\" whose outcomes will be utilized in the i2X project through the application of technical guidelines for the exchange of medical data for primary use, in accordance with the European Health Data Space regulation. The research organization Cyens, with its extensive experience in implementing eHealth applications, will deploy cross-border health services at a pilot level. The German Oncology Center, as the end user of these cross-border health services, will implement the results of the i2X project.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this initiative lies the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF) \u2013 a key component of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), established under the provisions of the recent Regulation. This format is of critical importance for both the primary use of health data (supporting individual patient care) and their secondary use (policy-making, research, and innovation).<\/p>\n

The aim of the project is the sustainable implementation of the EEHRxF under real-world conditions across the five core categories of health data (patient summary, ePrescriptions, laboratory results, medical images and reports, and hospital discharge reports), through more than 35 pilot programs across 14 healthcare systems in 12 EU Member States, supported by 38 partners. These pilot implementations in normal operating conditions will demonstrate that the application of the EEHRxF can improve various healthcare pathways without placing additional burdens on healthcare professionals or systems. The project will generate knowledge and best practices to accelerate the adoption of the format across Europe while promoting interoperability between healthcare organizations and health systems.<\/p>\n

i2X is a practical implementation project that involves experimentation in real clinical environments to explore better methods for storing, exchanging, and using health data. By leveraging advanced digital tools that facilitate the daily tasks of healthcare professionals, i2X will deliver evidence-based findings, policy recommendations, and technical guidance in line with EU standards. Additionally, it will create opportunities for other organizations to engage as early adopters.<\/p>\n

The project plays a significant role in strengthening open innovation policies and implementing the MyHealth@EU services. i2X is committed to improving the experience of both healthcare professionals and patients by optimizing workflow and integrating cutting-edge technologies into healthcare, health care, and prevention.<\/p>\n

The project will focus on demonstrating the benefits for patients and citizens by improving the system, reducing costs, and providing actionable recommendations for the successful implementation of the EEHRxF. This opens the door to a new era of digitally interconnected healthcare systems in Europe and promises a 75% improvement in citizens' access to their own health data, both at the national and cross-border levels.<\/p>\n

In the next four years, the project will involve 12 EU member states \u2014 Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Netherlands, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Finland. In most of these countries, \"demonstration facilities\" will be set up, where at least 1,200 healthcare professionals are expected to participate, while more than 3 million European citizens will
